The annual Baroque Horse Festival at Kryal Castle in Ballarat is returning for a horse-powered weekend from Saturday 17th of February until Sunday 18th of February. Only an hour from Melbourne at Australia’s only medieval theme park, the festival will showcase breathtaking equine displays with stunning Baroque horse breeds dating as far back as the late 16th Century. From gorgeous Friesian, Andalusian, Lusitano, Lipizzan, and other historic steeds, equine enthusiasts and horse lovers alike are sure to be mesmerised by these European beauties!
Throughout the festival, visitors can witness an array of thrilling horsemanship during traditional and more modern performances. Kicking off the festival with Horseback Archery, visitors can watch in wonder as skilled riders shoot arrows while atop prancing steeds in a feat no less impressive than when it originated centuries ago. Followed by a skillful Long Reining performance, equestrians will guide their horses from the ground through tricky maneuvers in a demonstration sure to rein in even the toughest judges.
To spur on the performances, one of the oldest competitive equestrian sports, Horse Driving will also be on display. Showcasing the gracefulness, agility, and suppleness of steeds, visitors will be on the edge of their saddles as skilled horses and their riders perform masterful movements across the arena.
A ‘mane’ attraction of the festival, stunning Garrocha demonstrations will transport all to the heart of Spain’s rich equestrian culture. Originally from Spanish bullfighting techniques, riders will guide their hooved friends through a series of complex footwork displays with wooden poles. Showcasing the harmony between horse and rider, the historic Garrocha is beautiful to witness.
To close the festival, visitors can admire the stunning Baroque breeds up close during the Grand Parade as they trot their stuff across the arena. Lucky ones can even give these Spanish beauties a pat and scratch while asking their riders a question or two!
As well as stunning horse displays, the festival will also offer a range of fun entertainment and tasty food and drink offerings for those of all ages. With medieval vendors selling leatherworks and horse attire, and kids activities including face painting, archery, craft, and much more, it is bound to be the perfect day out to horse around.
An exclusive offering, on the 16th of February the festival’s Friday Night Feast will be in full gallop offering a delicious three-course meal and entertainment. Indulging in cuisine from the Spanish and Portuguese regions and a complimentary glass of sangria to set the festive mood, guests will be offered the greatest horse-pitality. Live performances by the sensational Twilight Gypsy, the music group’s Spanish rhythms are sure to have all swaying on the dance floor. Limited tickets are available, and those interested in this intimate evening of exceptional Spanish food and culture are advised to book quickly!
